Crypto tax calculator for Spain

Paste your buy and sell history and work out the capital gain with FIFO, the method Spanish law makes compulsory (art. 37.2 LIRPF), and the tax due in the base del ahorro (savings tax base) of the IRPF, Spain's personal income tax.

This is a calculation tool, not tax advice. It gives you an estimate with the law in hand, but it does not know the rest of your return. It does not work for the Basque Country or Navarre, which have their own foral tax regimes. Before you file, check against the manual of the Agencia Tributaria, the Spanish tax authority, or with an adviser.

One per line: date  type  coin  amount  price per unit in euros. Separate with a tab, a semicolon or two spaces. The type is one of: buy, sell, reward, staking, airdrop (the Spanish words compra, venta and recompensa work too).

From the same tax year. They go to the same base.
Not yet offset, from the last four tax years.

Tax year 2024

€17,000.00

net gains and losses

€17,000.00

savings tax base

€3,450.00

tax due

20.29%

effective average rate

Where that figure comes from

2 disposals worth €30,000.00: €17,000.00 in gains and €0.00 in losses. Within the same tax year they offset each other with no limit at all — the 25% limit only appears when crossing over into interest and dividends.

Each row is one lot consumed by FIFO. A single sale can split into several rows if it reaches lots bought at different prices — that is exactly what FIFO forces you to do.
Coin Amount Bought Cost Sold Proceeds Result
bitcoin 0.5 Jan 15, 2023 €10,000.00 Mar 1, 2024 €25,000.00 +€15,000.00 gain
bitcoin 0.1 Jun 10, 2023 €3,000.00 Mar 1, 2024 €5,000.00 +€2,000.00 gain

How it splits across the bands

The savings scale is progressive, band by band: a single rate is not applied to the whole base. It is the most common mistake when working this out by hand.

Combined scale — state and regional — of the base del ahorro for tax year 2024.
Band Rate Base in the band Tax
€0 — €6,000 19% €6,000.00 €1,140.00
€6,000 — €50,000 21% €11,000.00 €2,310.00

Is your history spread across several exchanges?

Copying and pasting the history works with a handful of transactions. With the export from two or three exchanges, it stops working. We are building automatic import: you upload the CSV your exchange gives you and the calculation comes out done.

Only to tell you about this. No promotions, nothing passed on to third parties, and you can unsubscribe whenever you like. We do not save your transactions, only the email address. More detail in the privacy policy.

What to understand before trusting the number

FIFO is compulsory, and it is not the same as average cost

If you bought the same coin several times at different prices, the ones sold are the first ones you bought. You cannot choose the lot, and the average price will not do. In the example above the difference between FIFO and average cost is €2,000 of taxable base.

Swapping one crypto for another is taxable

A swap — bitcoin for ethereum, never passing through euros — is a disposal for the Agencia Tributaria. There is a gain or a loss on what leaves, valued at the market price of the day, even though you never saw a euro. It is what catches people out most. Here you write it as two lines with the same date: a sale and a purchase.

Losses count, with rules

Within the same tax year, capital losses come off gains with no limit. If the net figure is negative, you can offset it against interest and dividends only up to 25% of that positive balance, and whatever is left carries forward four tax years.

When and where it is declared

In the Renta, Spain's annual income tax return, filed the year after the sale, during the campaign that runs from April to June: what you sold in 2025 is declared in the spring of 2026. Gains and losses from disposing of cryptocurrencies go in the base del ahorro, in the section Renta Web sets aside for virtual currencies, and they are declared even if the platform never sends you a certificate: the obligation is yours, not theirs. Since 2024 platforms based in Spain report balances and transactions to the Agencia Tributaria (forms 172 and 173), and the European DAC8 rules extend that obligation to platforms in the rest of the Union from 2026: what you leave out is not invisible.

Staking, airdrops and NFTs do not go through here

This calculator covers purchases, sales and swaps. Anything received without selling is taxed another way, following the criteria published by the Dirección General de Tributos, the directorate that issues binding tax rulings: staking rewards are rendimientos del capital mobiliario (investment income), at their value in euros on the day they are received; an airdrop is a capital gain that does not come from a disposal, and goes to the base general (general tax base). And when you later sell those coins, that value on receipt is their purchase price for the FIFO here.

What this calculator does NOT do

  • It does not work for the Basque Country or Navarre: they have their own foral regime.
  • It does not know the rest of your return: personal allowance, reductions or withholdings.
  • It does not calculate the modelo 721, the informative return for crypto-assets held abroad. For that, the modelo 721 checker.
  • It does not apply coeficientes de abatimiento (taper relief): there are none for acquisitions after 1994.
  • It does not convert currencies. If you traded in dollars, enter the amounts already in euros at the exchange rate on the day of each transaction.

If you are looking for where to trade with an authorised platform, the list of providers with a MiCA licence. Our longer guides — the one on crypto taxation in Spain, the one on how to buy and the one on how to sell and cash out to your bank — are written in Spanish for now.
